How to read the timeline

History makes the message clearer.

01

Find the crisis

Notice the empire, king, covenant failure, or turning point surrounding each message.

02

Identify the audience

Israel, Judah, exiles, and foreign nations are not interchangeable audiences.

03

Follow judgment to hope

The prophets expose sin, but repeatedly move toward repentance, restoration, and God’s reign.

A note on chronology

Dates are guides, not inspired headings.

Biblical books do not always arrange events chronologically, and some prophets do not name a king or datable event. This timeline distinguishes firm dates, reasonable approximations, and genuinely debated placements.

Joel and Obadiah have broad or representative ranges because faithful scholars place them in different periods.

A person appearing here is not automatically a faithful prophet. Scripture also records foreign, debated, and false prophetic voices; those are separated by the “Voice type” label so they cannot be confused with God’s faithful messengers.
